Question about ferret diarrhea (gets kinda graphic)?
We just got a new ferret today, and he's been fine in the aspects of playing, getting along with our other two, eating, drinking, etc. He's also been using the litter box okay, but a little while ago he had what I *think* is diarrhea. I've only had the other two ferrets for a little while, so I honestly don't know for sure. It was yellow and kind of mucus-y looking. Is he possibly sick?
*We got him from a pet store where I'm pretty sure they were feeding him similar (or the same) type of food as we're feeding him now.
Thanks guys! I guess I'll just wait and see if it happens again. ^-^
Unfortunately the first thing you should have done was asked the pet shop what they are feeding their ferts. Also...are you keeping the ferrets together? (Same room, same cage)
To be on the safe side...call the pet store and ask what they are feeding. Put the new ferret on that food and SLOWLY add what you are feeding your other ferrets. His poor tummy.
He probably has a nasty belly ache. ALSO separate your ferrets now! There is always a possibility that your new ferret is not healthy and it is better to have one sick ferret then a whole group of sick ferrets. Finally...make an appointment with your vet. Ferrets are not hamsters and gerbils! It is important that they see the vet just like dogs and cats.
Begin introducing your ferrets again AFTER you are sure the new guy isn't sick and/or when you get clearance from the vet.
Good luck and take care of those ferts!
FYI: ECE typically starts out as orangy/yellowish "seedy" stools and progresses to green slimmey stools. Please research common ferret deseases and disorders at http://www.ferretunivers.com before getting too worked up.
