Eco aquariums and african dwarf frogs?
I've been seeing these little mini eco aquariums some places,I think that its a cute little tank setup.My only problem is the care directions and tank size they put the poor frogs in.I think the frogs are kinda cute.I was wondering if you could keep them in one of those kritter keepers bowl with a bit of gravel and a plant or hiding spot?Could you feed them betta pellets?How do you care for YOUR pet frogs?BTW I have pet fish to,but I think I would have problems feeding them because of the fish.
I've had two of these cute little critters for over 2 years. I had rescued mine from one of those tiny eco aquariums. They really are NOT a good habitat for these frogs. They require a minimum of at least one gallon per frog. Not to mention that feeding only twice a week is starving them. Mine two are in a five gallon set up with an Aquaclear filter and a Marineland Stealth heater (they require water temperatures in the mid 70's). If you are seriously considering getting a couple of these frogs, you can get a 5 gallon tank set up for pretty cheap at Walmart. It include a glass aquarium with lighted hood, a filter, and a heater for under $50.00. Here is the link.

You can keep them with fish, but they seem to do better in a tank on their own. You will want to get some silk plants (plastic plants have sharp edges that can easily cut their delicate skin) and some gravel that is either a sand type that if swallowed is small enough for them to pass, or gravel that is too big for them to swallow (they have been known on a rare occasion to swallow gravel which then gets lodged in their intestines and they can die from this). My tank has Petsmart Mardi Gras colored gravel in it. This gravel is just big enough that they can not swallow it. They also like hiding places. A small frog-sized terra cotta flower pot ( from any craft store) turned onto its side is an excellent hiding place for them. Mine love them and their really cheap (under $1.00 each).
I feed my frogs daily and I only feed them frozen foods. Certain pellets have been known to cause intestinal impaction when they swell in the fluids in their stomachs. However, if you prefer to feed pellets, I do know of one good brand that has soft pellets- HBH Frog and Tadpole Bites.

I have bought these before but have never been able to get my frogs to eat them, although my friends frogs do eat them. My frogs main diet consists primarily of Hikari frozen bloodworms (thawed in a paper cup with some of their aquarium water). These are guaranteed free of bacteria and parasites and have extra vitamins added. My frogs also enjoy frozen brine shrimp, glass worms, and tubifex worms once or twice a week. These worms are not very expensive. A pack of bloodworms will cost me about $5.00 and will last me around two months. I will warn you that these frogs have very poor eyesight. I hand feed mine with a turkey baster. I dangle a worm over their head and they will eat the worm right from the tip of the baster. This way of feeding will prevent the food from being lost in the gravel and making their water all murky. I have also known people who use a small terra cotta plate that you can get at any craft store where they sell the flower pots. They are usually under $1.00 a piece. You could put their food into the plate and the frogs get to know where to find the food, and this makes it easier to remove the food that they don't eat before it makes your water gross.
I would also recommend when you set up your aquarium to add some Tetra Safestart.

This will help to speed up the establishment of your biological filter by adding the right kind of live nitrifying bacteria into your tank. Cycling your tank is important to any aquatic creature living in it. This is what keeps toxic ammonia and nitrite levels low.
