What is the best substrate for an iguana?
Im getting an iguana soon, and i have a LARGE outside cage for it.
And i need help choosing what substrate to use.
I might put some towels in there (not paper towels) for comfort etc., but i need a substrate to go at the way bottom, one the wont get moldy from rain, water, etc., and one that won't get mites like dirt and bark.
my local Petco store is selling Zilla Alfalfa Meal Reptile Bedding, would that be good, so my iggy can eat it aswell as 'live' on it?
thanks SO much for the help! 10 points for BA!!
p.s.- its not an adult, it'll be a baby, but the cage is 23” deep, 42” wide, & 94” high. thanks again!
The best substrate for iguanas is Astroturf, which is suitable for outside use, and can be cleaned easily. When using this, it is best to have two sheets which are ct to fit the bottom of the cage, so there is always a clean substrate for the bottom of the cage. By using this, it means it does not harbor mites and other parasites, is easy to clean, is safe, and lasts longer than any substrate.
However, if you want to use something different, there are alternatives, however these are not as good at providing the conditions you need (especially when the enclosure is outside.
You might consider using:
Newspaper
Butcher Paper
Towels
Alfalfa Pellets (which can be eaten)
Do NOT use:
Sand
Gravel
Wood Shavings
Corn Cob Material
Walnut Shells
Cat Litter
Cedar Wood Shavings ( poisonous to reptiles)
In my opinion, i would use Astroturf. When cleaning this, use ordinary soap and water, however leave the cleaned sheet to dry THOROUGHLY before using it again. Use the spare sheet instead of the one you have just cleaned, then you can replace the sheets each time you clean.
